About This Assessment

Every child learns to read differently, and the first step in helping a struggling reader is understanding exactly where their skills are breaking down. This literacy assessment is designed to identify your child's specific strengths and needs so that instruction can be built around them — not a generic starting point, but a plan tailored to your child. 

• Up to 3 testing sessions, with each session building on the last until we find your child's true instructional starting point — paced to keep your child comfortable and engaged throughout
• Comprehensive scoring and analysis of foundational reading skills, decoding, spelling patterns, and fluency
• A detailed written report outlining your child's results and what they mean
• A results call where we go through the report together, answer your questions, and talk through what instruction would look like moving forward

• Oral Language (listening and speaking)
• Phonological Awareness (rhyme, syllables, onset-rime, and phoneme-level skills; phonemic automaticity assessed via Kilpatrick's PAST)
• Print Concepts (print awareness, alphabet knowledge, and print knowledge)
• Decoding and Spelling
• Reading Fluency (via DIBELS Oral Reading Fluency)
• Writing (letter formation and spelling development)

Areas that may benefit from additional, targeted support are identified from these results and discussed during your results call.

2. Testing sessions. Each session moves through a structured process step by step, adjusting pace as needed to keep your child engaged and accurately assessed.
3. Scoring & report writing. I take the time to carefully review the results to see the full picture — understanding your child's strengths as clearly as their needs.
4. Results call. We'll talk by phone to walk through the assessment together, answer your questions, and discuss the instructional plan I'd recommend for your child.
5. Next steps. From there, we'll talk about frequency, scheduling, and how ongoing instruction would be structured around what your child specifically needs.

Effort alone doesn't fix a reading struggle — a child can work incredibly hard for years and still fall further behind. This assessment gives us a clear, accurate picture of where your child is right now, so instruction moves forward built on your child's actual needs, backed by real data.
